St Mary Overie was the burial place for various men associated with the Shakespearean London theatres.

What is now Southwark Cathedral was not actually a cathedral but a church. It was very close to the theatres south of the river, and so various leading figures from London’s first theatrical industry are buried here.

These include Shakespeare’s brother, Edmond, as well as the actor Will Kempe and playwrights John Fletcher and Philip Massinger.
